Bushwick Inlet sample entry

22:35 Dec 17 2012 Bushwick Inlet Park

Bushwick Inlet sample entry
Description
ex. Site was designed to accommodate 100 year flood. Inundation reached higher than expected - see mapped line. Shoreline was eroded approximately 1-2' in some places. Minimal vegetation damage on site. In the future we will install more salt-tolerant plantings to stabilize the edge and mitigate flooding.
Additional Data
Background: context, existing conditions: ex. In 2005, the City’s rezoning of the Greenpoint-Williamsburg waterfront mapped the 28-acres of the future Bushwick Inlet Park as parkland. In 2006, the City filed to acquire the land owned by Bayside Fuel. However, an application from TransGas to construct a power plant on this site was pending from 2002. Now that the State has rejected the power plan proposal, the City can move forward with acquiring the site.
Design Intent Details: why site was designed the way it was, general specifications, installation cost: ex. The 28-acre Bushwick Inlet Park, which is currently being designed, will include boat launches, picnic grounds, soccer fields, wetland preserves, and a 2-mile bicycle and pedestrian path along the East River waterfront
Impact of Sandy: ex. Inundated with mild erosion. too soon to tell full extent of damage to plants but most appear resilient.
Performance During and After Sandy: ex. most areas of park fared well during and after Sandy. Minor debris was deposited onsite from surge. No damage to structures (materials ___).
Lessons Learned and Relevance to Future Design: ex. soft edge reinforced with plantings resilient.
Site Use: ex. park
Size: ex. 28 acres
Area Flooded: ex. 40% flooded
Edge Conditions: proportion of hard and soft edges, describe materials and observed erosion or resilience: ex. 50% riprap, 10% sand/beach, 40% vegetated edge - spartina alterniflora. minor erosion of beach. grasses resilient. no damage to riprap.
Vegetation: % of site with vegetation, describe proportion of turf to dense vegetation, types of plantings and immediate observations on species resilience: ex. 20% trees and shrubs. Species include scrub oak, barberry. Both resilient. Lost large willow tree.
Storm Water Management Strategy: describe site drainage system and how this fared if inundated: ex. swales were inundated, held water for 6-7 hours after tide retreated. no visible damage to salt tolerant plantings.
Paving and Permeability: % paved, types of paving, permeability and observed impacts: ex. Hex pavers, semi-permeable. Resilient inland but crumbled on edge.
Structures and Outdoor Furniture: describe types, materials, damage and resilience: ex. benches made of ___ sustained damage from fallen tree, well-anchored in concrete
Total Estimated Cost of Damage: ex. $100,000
